Chakin — Traditional Tea Ceremony Cloth

The chakin (茶巾) is a small linen cloth used to dry and purify the chawan before matcha is prepared — one of the quiet, essential gestures that opens every tea ceremony. Before whisking, the host wipes the inside of the bowl with the chakin, both to remove any lingering moisture and, symbolically, to ready the vessel with intention and care.

Folded with precision and handled according to a set sequence of movements, the way the chakin is used is itself part of the choreography of the temae — nothing in tea ceremony is incidental, and even this simple act of wiping a bowl carries the same mindfulness as every other step. Traditionally made of white linen or hemp, its plain, unadorned form is a deliberate contrast to the beauty of the chawan it prepares.

A small but essential tool for anyone practicing proper matcha preparation, whether in daily ritual or formal ceremony.

Traditional linen cloth. Used to purify and dry the chawan before whisking. Essential for proper tea ceremony technique.
